Prayer and Spiritual Intimacy (Part II)

By A. Davinciandres

Does God answer prayers? Do we feel the voice of God? Does the Spirit of God actually accompany us in our lives? People do not always talk about this, and if they would do so, it would be with indifference; sometimes they would just remain silent and disappointed. The common complaint of human beings would be: "God does not speak to me as he spoke in ancient times. "Many feel unworthy of that privilege despite their "belief." They think they do not deserve to hear the voice of God. The most steadfast in the faith, believe that is the will of God, in his sovereignty, not to speak except in special circumstances and through special people. Consider what the truth behind all of this is.

God speaks to us constantly, but does so through His Spirit. When the Holy Spirit of God speaks, it really captures our attention. But people are so used to the idea of not paying the special attention this unique voice deserves. We could find thousands of so called excuses for not listening or not acknowledging His voice. So, when we don’t hear His message, we belittle His purpose, and as a result, we do not enjoy the voice of God. It's like going through life suffering the most absurd of all curses, religious self pity, which is very often the voice of the enemy, saying: "You believe in a God that does not talk, does not listen to you and does not even exist."

The Holy Spirit promised by Jesus Christ begins to "cohabit" in our hearts, hoping to have your permission to feel safe and really welcomed. The Holy Spirit of God begins to make plans to build our lives, begins to feel comfortable in the tiny place we have given. After all, we are sinners who return to the arms of the Lord. But from that small place He begins to work wonders in people’s life! Begins to make us feel an inexplicable peace and make us see life through His eyes and through the mind of Christ. He will start to give us some signs that we will grasp if we are attentive and sensitive. At first, we boast and promise all our heart, we speak to Him as the king who should sit on our throne. But He knows we are just beginning, He knows we will not comply; He can see the condition of our heart before entering it. But in spite of everything, a personal relationship has begun!

Ask yourself: From which room in your heart are you operating right now? Are you are still at the foot of the Holy Spirit, just at the entrance of your heart, or are you in any carnal or empty room? Are there any rooms in which the Holy Spirit of God has never been welcome? It’s there a room that still is not cleaned, filled with spiritual garbage, full of lies, hurt and fear, perhaps full of pride and resentment?

Do not be fooled! Certainly the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart! But he is in the small room next door. Or even still in the doorway, or occupying a small uncomfortable chair in a corner. Did not you promise to sit Him on the throne of your life? The Bible says: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Luke 12:34). The reality is that when we pray, we talk and we express, but prayer, as all good communication, must be complemented in two ways by means of listening. Do you have the Spirit of God in the right place? Are you in a position to listen when you pray?

The Holy Spirit is always drawing our attention and always talking to us, but it seems that He does it in secret. He always talks in our ear. It's like a whisper that we often confuse arrogantly with our own intelligence or any special enlightenment. Sometimes we are told in a very low tone, things that we do not want anyone else to hear. They are sometimes very small things that sharpen our awareness and our sense of justice. Sometimes would say something that makes us trust more to increase our faith. That inner voice produces a particular conviction and we know beyond all doubt that everything will be fine.

When we are born again, our God-given spirit is regenerated for the first time in the presence of the Holy Spirit who gives life. This is the first time we identify the voice and the special touch of God's Spirit in our lives. From this moment on we will speak and will have the ability to listen and understand what He is advising us, however we are free to ignore Him, as is sometimes done to children or to our partner. Spiritual maturity is not required in order to hear the voice of the Spirit of God. But to want, and learn to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit, is a condition accessible to believers who want to mature and grow in their relationship with Christ!
